We’ve all felt the horror of the coronavirus situation. We’re basically locked in our homes. Some people are able to do their jobs from home while others are eyeing the unemployment apps. Almost all of us are searching for something to do in order not to lose our minds from boredom.
After all, we can only clean the house so many times before our fingers become wrinkled. Many people eat all the groceries in a few days, and they wonder if there’s anything else to life in this situation. There is. Here’s how to remain healthy during this lockdown:
💗 Exercise The Body
Some states have established curfews. Some must be in the house by 8-9PM. While it’s good to see people taking this virus seriously, they also need to get out and get moving for the sake of their health. These are some ideas that might help.
⭐ Take A Walk
Walking is the healthiest, low impact exercise you can do – and you get some fresh air! While you’re walking, work those arms back and forth to work out the biceps and triceps. Pump them in the air like you’re at a rock concert. Swing them across your chest to work the shoulders. Pull them back as if to squeeze the shoulder blades together. This works the chest muscles.
⭐ Step Aerobics
Go out the back door and down the steps. Now step onto the bottom step with one leg and back down with the same leg. As you step, lift your arms as we talked about above. Now step up with the other leg and back down with the same leg. Crank up your music and work those legs!
It’s been said that sex and swimming are the best exercise because they literally use every muscle in the body. If you have a swimming pool, then take the plunge. If you have a spouse or significant other, hop into bed. You’ll be relaxed, your mind will be too, and you will definitely NOT be bored. 😉
Play basketball even if you don’t have a basketball net. Dribble, bounce around, and shoot “baskets.” Play golf. Get your “club” lined up with the “ball” and remember to follow through. Jump rope! Hula hoop! Plant flowers in the yard. Wash the siding. Wash the windows. Clean out the gutters. You’ll be getting exercise, Vitamin D, and fresh air. You’ll sleep better and more restfully. Most importantly, you won’t be bored to pieces.
💗 Exercise The Mind
Our minds need to be stretched and exercised, just like our bodies. Our brain is like a muscle, one that needs to be used to strengthen it.
⭐ Read A Book
There are dozens of websites from which you can download books. My personal favorite is pdfdrive.com. Download your favorite authors as well as a few for the kids.
⭐ Do A Crossword Puzzle
Nothing beats doing the New York Times Sunday crossword. Try doing it without a thesaurus. That will stretch the brain nicely. On the NYT page are also other types of puzzles like Soduku, Jumble, Mini, Spelling Bee, and more. Go on, stretch that muscle, and no cheating!
⭐ Watch a Documentary or Docu-series
Watching documentaries and docu-series is a great way to learn something new! There are some incredible options – everything from veganism to serial killers! Pick something, and sink back while you absorb all the new information, right from your bed.
We can’t be too safe when it comes to our food during this time. Also, it’s important to make sure we’re getting all the nutrients that we need to stay healthy and keep our immune systems up. We’ve got some tips:
⭐ Clean Your Food
When you get home from the grocery store, it’s important to clean what you got. You can wipe down any cans or packaging with any type of disinfectant wipe. For all your produce, you can wash with soap and water. Another option is filling a large bowl or pot with warm water and three tablespoons of baking soda and letting your fresh foods and even cans sit for about 15 minutes. Gently wash them in the solution and rinse very well. Let them air dry.
⭐ Meal Prep
Planning out and preparing meals for the week is a great way to have quick and easy meals and also an excellent way to ensure you have enough food for the week. If you don’t have carry-out containers, you can use bowls and plates with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. There are even some great sustainable packaging options that you can grab online.
⭐ Eat Colors
Now that you know how to clean food and cans from the grocery store, grab some fresh fruits and veggies. Eat a lot of red, orange, yellow, and of course green fresh foods. Eating the rainbow ensures that you’re getting a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.
If the family won’t eat salads, cut the vegetables into strips, mix them with a cooked whole grain pasta, toss it in Italian salad dressing, and watch them scarf it down. You can make a colorful fruit salad using strawberries, pineapple chunks, blueberries, blackberries (lots of antioxidants,) and bananas. Mix in coconut, cottage cheese (but don’t tell them!) and the powder of your choice of Jello. Mix it all together with Cool Whip, and they’ll love it.
This lockdown is the perfect opportunity to get outside, get some fresh air and exercise, stretch the brain, and cook healthy meals with our families. We are being given a chance we might never have again to get closer to our families. Have fun together, and we’ll see you when this is all over!
